#4 - gen Z: Fast & Curious

Earth to millennial, the centennial is here to take over your crown. Known as Generation Z(gen Z) —born  after 1995— they are redefining political movements, religion, popular culture, social distancing and more.

They are the first truly connected generation. And yet they will also be the first generation for whom social distancing has become the new normal. Born into technology, raised with information on their fingertips, gen Z is now living to tell the tale of COVID-19, one of the greatest pandemic to have hit the globalized world in the last few decades.

When 16-year-old Greta Thunberg addressed the 2019 U.N. Climate Action Summit , the way she excoriated world leaders for their inaction on climate change was striking. At just 23, Malala Yousafzai has been a champion for women’s rights. In 2008 when she wrote about the Taliban’s growing influence in Pakistan, she was only fourteen and was shot after calling for better education for women, yet undeterred by the warnings and death threats, in the years that followed, she’s continued to campaign, and has written a best-selling memoir ; becoming the youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate in history. Pop artist Billie Eilish is arguably one of the most popular Gen Zers. By the age of 19, her album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? has been streamed billions of times and she has won multiple Grammys – five at the 2020 Grammys alone. CoverGirl Ambassador and all around makeup guru, the 22-year-old James Charles has 26.5 million followers and is constantly posting makeup looks on our feeds. James’ partnership with CoverGirl started a major buzz in the boy beauty arena and ever since, other beauty brands have started to follow suit and move towards a more inclusive industry.

India stands out with a population that includes 375 million people — 27% of the total — in gen Z.

Gen Zers filter information as easily as applying filters on Instagram feeds with the attention span of a fruit fly. Change is the only constant in their lives. They embrace change.

Members of gen Z are more ethically progressive than any previous generation, and they are on track to be the most well-educated generation yet. They are also digital natives who have little or no memory of the world as it existed before smartphones. Generation Z is financially savvy. Compared to teenagers of other generations, gen Z ranks as the most informed. They worry about our future and are much less concerned about typical teen problems. The Economist has described Generation Z as a more educated, well-behaved, stressed and depressed generation in comparison to previous generations.

The Millennials who were once the cool and trendy people have now been dethroned by Gen Z.
